Finding God in the ordinary: a visual reminder
You probably recently received a poster from me. How nice that you clicked on the QR code and ended up here! In this blog, you can read more explanation for each image.
I am incredibly enthusiastic about the book Liturgy of the Everyday by Tish Warren. In eleven chapters, she shows how you can involve God precisely in ordinary, daily moments. It is a beautiful book that I have read several times, and every time I discover new insights.
As a reminder, I had a poster designed by Buro Blob so that you can hang it up in a place where you see it regularly. The poster contains eleven short tips, inspired by the eleven chapters of the book. Below, I will briefly walk you through them.
1. Know that you are loved
This first point is about the moment you wake up. My thoughts often race in all directions then: from my to-do list to my worries. But this chapter helps me to first pause at a deeper truth: Even before I have done anything that day, I am loved by God.
2. Start the day right
This chapter is about a simple ritual: making your bed. What I often do is not only straighten my duvet, but at the same time lay my life down before God. A short prayer during this small gesture helps me place my day in His hands.
3. Brush your teeth
Every morning, you take a quick look in the mirror. It is a good moment to reflect on the fact that your health is a gift from God.
4. Where are my keys?!
Everyone knows it: frustration when you lose something. Such moments can also make us aware of our own doubts and shortcomings. Know that you may admit your shortcomings to God and live from forgiveness.
5. Food and the Living Bread
Every meal reminds us of Jesus, who calls himself the Living Bread. Just as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper in church, at every meal we may think about how He nourishes us, not only physically but also spiritually.
6. Bringing peace, also at home
In many churches, peace is wished to one another around Holy Communion. But how is that at home? Even when peace is sometimes hard to find, we may be reminded that we can be peacemakers.
7. Emailing with a mission
Emails often feel like an obligation, an endless stream of messages. But what if, every time we send an email, we think: I am blessed, and I may be a blessing ?
8. Waiting as a spiritual exercise
We wait every day: in traffic jams, at traffic lights, in a checkout line. Often frustrating, but it can also be an opportunity to grow in patience and trust.
9. A bell with meaning
A phone call with a friend is more than just a conversation. It reminds us that we do not believe alone. We need others to encourage and inspire us.
10. Coffee, tea and beauty
Every sip of coffee or tea can point us to something greater: the beauty of God’s creation, the artistry, the good in life.
11. Finding rest in trust
At the end of the day, we can lay everything down before God again. He carries us, day in and day out.
I hope this poster helps you find God in the ordinary!
